An imposing and elegant figurative torchère in patinated bronze, signed “E. Picault,” by the French sculptor Émile Louis Picault (1833–1915), dating from the late 19th or early 20th century. The sculpture depicts a graceful, classically inspired female figure, standing in an elegant contrapposto pose. She wears a richly draped garment and supports a large decorative torch on her shoulder. Great care has been taken with the rendering of the serene face, the finely modeled hairstyle, the hands, and especially the richly falling folds of the garment. The torch is richly decorated in a Neo-Greek style, with geometric friezes and ornaments drawn from classical antiquity. At the top is a striking opal-glass cap in the shape of a flame, allowing the object to be used both as a sculpture and as a decorative lamp. The dark brown patina of the bronze, with natural nuances and subtle variations, accentuates the relief and the modeling of the figure. The sculpture is signed on the base “E.
