WHY TO BUY EARLY AMERICANA – One of the most important printed testimonies on Florida in the 16th century and on the colonial competition between France and Spain in the New World. DE BRY’S GREAT VOYAGES – Belongs to the second part of the imposing America collection by Theodor de Bry, one of the monumental editorial landmarks of Renaissance travel literature. HUGUENOT FLORIDA – Documents the attempts to found a Protestant French colony in Florida, culminating in the destruction of Fort Caroline by the Spaniards in 1565. EXTREMELY RARE TEXTUAL SECTION – Although lacking the plates and the general title page, the textual core of 30 pages appears very rarely separated on the antiquarian market; a similar specimen offered precisely as text without engravings is documented. MARKET VALUE Complete copies of the second part of De Bry’s Americae, with title pages, map and plates, reach very high values and belong to a completely different collecting category. The present specimen consists instead of the sole 30-page Latin text of the relation, lacking the general title page, the map and the entire apparatus of copperplate plates. For this specimen, in generally good condition and well presented in modern binding, I would indicate a market range of about €800–1200. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION AND CONDITION Recent binding in hard parchment, very clean, with a red inlay on the front board bearing in gold “Gallorum in Floridam / Navigatio Duce / Laudonniero / 1564”. Text in Latin with marginal notes, illuminated initials and tailpieces of woodcut. The complete collation of the 1591 edition included [8], 30 pp., [4] pp., a folded map, XLII plates and further pages of text; the present specimen contains exclusively the narrative section of 30 pages with the errata leaf, without the general title page, map and plates. Uniformly browned paper, with occasional small stains and slight humidity halos. It should be expressly noted that the volume is a separate textual portion of the complete work and does not include De Bry’s famous engravings. In old books, with a centuries-long history, there may be some imperfections not always noted in the description. This listing includes AI Visuals. Please refer to the original photographs to verify the object’s actual condition. The images are an integral part of the description. Pp. (2); 30; 2nn; (2). FULL TITLE AND AUTHOR Gallorum in Floridam Americae provinciam altera navigatio, duce Laudonniero, anno MDLXIIII. [Francoforti ad Moenum, Typis Ioannis Wecheli, sumptibus vero Theodori de Bry; venales reperiuntur in officina Sigismundi Feyerabendii, 1591]. Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues. CONTEXT AND SIGNIFICANCE The second part of De Bry’s Americae is one of the fundamental iconographic and narrative sources for the history of 16th-century Florida. In 1562 Jean Ribault reached the southeastern coast of North America with a group of French Huguenots, intending to establish a colonial base that could also offer refuge to Protestants persecuted in France. In 1564 René de Laudonnière led a second expedition and founded Fort Caroline near present-day Jacksonville. The colony, however, had a very brief life. In 1565 a Spanish expedition led by Pedro Menéndez de Avilés conquered Fort Caroline and ended the organized French presence in the region. Dominique de Gourgues returned to Florida in 1567 with a punitive expedition against the Spanish posts. The 1591 collection brings together the accounts of these events, and in particular the report by Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues, an artist and cartographer who had participated in Laudonnière’s expedition. The famous plates by De Bry were developed from drawings attributed to Le Moyne and profoundly influenced the European image of the Timucua peoples and of Florida for centuries. Modern scholars, however, emphasize that these images also strongly reflect European cultural and aesthetic categories. BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF THE AUTHOR Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues, who died in 1588, was a French cartographer, artist and traveler. He participated in René de Laudonnière’s Florida expedition in 1564 and was one of the few survivors of the destruction of the French colony. After returning to Europe he settled in England, where he worked as a botanical artist and cartographer. His account of Florida and the drawings attributed to him became the basis for the second part of Theodor de Bry’s Americae. Theodor de Bry (1528–1598), an engraver and publisher born in Liège and active mainly in Frankfurt, transformed the 16th-century travel accounts into one of the most monumental illustrated series devoted to the New World. PRINTING HISTORY AND CIRCULATION Brevis narratio was published in Frankfurt in 1591 as the second part of Theodor de Bry’s Americae. The original edition carried the typographic imprint of Johann Wechel, with the costs borne by Theodor de Bry and distribution through Sigismund Feyerabend. The publication existed in Latin and German and was reprinted subsequently. Wellcome also holds a second edition dated 1609. The specimen described here thus represents the textual core of the first Latin edition of 1591, separated from the iconographic apparatus.
