Aboca Edizioni presents the collectible facsimile of Kitâb al-Diryâq, a splendid manuscript written in 1199 by Muhammad ibn Abi al-Fath and conserved in the Bibliothèque nationale de Paris. The work is dedicated to teriaca, an ancient medicinal compound initially used to treat snake bites and later employed as a panacea. The seventy-two refined pages that compose the manuscript portray, through skilled miniatures and gilded scrolls, the medicinal plants most common and used in the Arab world of the XIIth century. From Oleg Grabar’s note: “The variety of character types, the range of clothes they wear or the activities in which they are engaged, the many animals (especially horses), the plants, objects and architectural fragments found on these pages are truly extraordinary and without equal in the XIIth century. […] How was all this possible in the years of decline of the XIIth century in some part of the Arabic-speaking world extending from Egypt to Iran? To the best of current knowledge, there were no attempts at such art before Kitâb al-Diryâq of 1199.” The rigorous commentary, by world-renowned Arabists, reconstructs the textual tradition of the manuscript, examines its content, and illustrates its historical significance, the iconographic program and decorative motifs. Aboca Edizioni’ collection facsimiles are luxury volumes, crafted with precious materials and state-of-the-art printing techniques. To realize Kitâb al-Diryâq, a heavy Munken Pure 200 g paper was chosen, enriched with inserts of satin gold leaf. The luxurious red and turquoise binding contains die-cut pages bound by hand and benefits from gold edges, also finished by hand. Notes The commentary is offered here in French, English and Arabic. Presentation by Valentino Mercati. Contributions by Jaclynne Kerner, Marie Geneviève Guesdon, Oleg Grabar, Françoise Micheau, Anne Caiozzo. More information The manuscript of Kitâb al-Diryâq entered the Bibliothèque nationale de Paris in May 1879, under shelf mark Supplement arabe 2433, after being purchased by a Parisian physician, Dr. Letorneau, for the sum of one thousand francs. The volume had previously belonged to a pharmacist, Jean Françoise Bonastre, who had acquired it on November 7, 1832. The manner in which it arrived in the West is unknown, but it is likely to have occurred in the eighteenth or early nineteenth century. In the East, the volume appears to have circulated mainly in Iran, as indicated by the copies added by the owners and the Persian notes on the last page. The last four lines of the last page are occupied by a colophon where the scribe, after indicating the end of the text, added the completion date to his name, corresponding to January 1199. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kit%C4%81b_al-Diry%C4%81q
