AUTHOR Nazzareno Sidoli (1879–1969) was an Italian painter. Born in Rossoreggio di Bettola in the province of Piacenza, belonging to a family of painters along with his brothers Pacifico and Giuseppe, he built his artistic training initially in Piacenza at the Art Institute "Gazzola," where he studied under Bernardino Pollinari and Stefano Bruzzi, then perfecting himself at the Accademies of Milan and Parma. His career was marked by a precocious and fortunate debut, culminating in his admission to the Milan Triennale of 1900 and with the important alliance with the patron Giuseppe Ricci Oddi, who purchased his first historical genre works, the "Moschettieri," as early as 1908. Fundamental for his maturation were long stays in Paris, where he worked successfully; here the artist, while remaining faithful to the solid constructive nature of Lombard naturalism, opened up to a very personal reading of post-impressionism. In museums and Salons, Sidoli elaborated an audacious synthesis between the meticulous miniaturist technique of the Dutch Seventeenth Century or Meissonier and the lively chromatic and luminous modern French style. He returned definitively to Piacenza in 1920, initiating a phase of research that, after a brief Symbolist interlude, focused on the truth of everyday data rendered through a painting technique that remained vibrantly expressive. In his poetics, portraiture occupies a central role, distinguished by a nearly Flemish care for detail and a deep psychological investigation. Sidoli immortalized historical and worldly figures, from the famous Buffalo Bill pastel (1905) to the portrait of Giosuè Carducci, up to numerous commissions for Italian and European aristocracy. Precisely through this genre, between the 1930s and 1940s, his style bore witness to a significant approach toward the atmospheres of Magical Realism. In this period his painting, while still anchored in reality, became more rarefied and silent; the precision of the line and the crystalline light conferred upon his subjects a solemn stillness and an almost timeless fixation, never abandoning, however, that chromatic vivacity, a living heritage of his Paris years, which prevents the subject from hardening into mere metaphysics, keeping it vibrant with color. In addition to intense portrait and religious activity — culminating in the frescoes for the Church of Corpus Domini in Piacenza — Sidoli exhibited his works in significant contexts, such as the Paris Salons and a solo show at the Municipality of Bologna in 1933. His stylistic evolution, aimed at a synthesis between Victorian verism and the inquietudes of the twentieth century, is today documented in important public collections. The core of his works is kept at the Galleria d’Arte Moderna "Ricci Oddi" in Piacenza, but his paintings also feature in the Galleria d’Arte Moderna of Bologna and in international institutions such as the museums of Strasbourg and Biarritz. DESCRIPTION "Ritratto di Menidcante" [Portrait of Menidcante], oil on panel, 49x39 cm, signed on the back, datable to the 1920s. The work presents a half-length male figure, an elderly man with a face partly in shadow, half-hidden by the brim of a worn dark hat. The gaze, seen from behind the brim of the hat, appears at once elusive and piercing, conveying a sense of dignity and resignation. The thick, unkempt beard and the pronounced facial features, rendered with a ruddy complexion emerging from the shadow, accentuate the impression of the character’s lived austerity. The background, treated with broad fields and blurred in shades of green, ocher and brown, blends with the figure, creating a suspended and almost primordial atmosphere. The painting technique reveals a tactile brushwork, rapid and at times nervous, that builds the forms through dense and overlapping touches, giving up minute definition of details in favor of a strong emotional impact. The chromatic palette is orchestrated in a balanced mix of warm, earthy tones, brightened by flashes of cooler color, such as the bluish hues glimpsed in the background and in the hat folds. The light, frontal but not dramatic, sculpts the volumes of the face and catches in the beard, giving the subject a sculptural solidity even within the overall fluidity of the brushwork. This work coherently fits Sidoli’s artistic path, in that phase of returning to Piacenza in the 1920s, when his painting, after the Symbolist interlude, focused on the "truth of daily data." The portrait testifies to that synthesis between the "constructive solidity of Lombard naturalism" and the "vibrant chromaticity" absorbed during his Paris years, where the artist opened up to "a personal reading of post-impressionism." CONDITION REPORT Good overall condition. Work intact in every part with vivid and legible color and brushwork. The photo of the painting placed in an environment has been generated with artificial intelligence and should be considered purely illustrative. Only the remaining photos are to be considered authoritative, as they faithfully show the object and its characteristics, both in general and in detail.
