Nazzareno Sidoli (1879–1969) - Ritratto di Vecchio Mendicante - NO RESERVE

AUTHOR Nazzareno Sidoli (1879–1969) was an Italian painter. Born in Rossoreggio di Bettola, in the province of Piacenza, he came from a family of painters together with his brothers Pacifico and Giuseppe. He built his artistic training initially in Piacenza at the Art Institute "Gazzola," where he was a pupil of Bernardino Pollinari and Stefano Bruzzi, then refining his studies at the Academies of Milan and Parma. His career was marked by an early and fortunate debut, culminating in his admission to the Milan Triennale of 1900 and the important alliance with the patron Giuseppe Ricci Oddi, who bought his first historical genre works, the "Musketeers," as early as 1908. Long stays in Paris were fundamental for his maturation, where he operated successfully; here the artist, while remaining faithful to the solid construction of Lombard naturalism, opened himself to a personal reading of post-impressionism. In museums and Salons, Sidoli developed a bold synthesis between the meticulous miniaturist technique of the Dutch Seventeenth Century or Meissonier and the lively chromatic and luminous modern French sensibility. He returned definitively to Piacenza in 1920, initiating a phase of research which, after a brief Symbolist interlude, focused on the truth of everyday reality expressed through a painting surface that remained ever vibrant. In his poetics, portraiture occupies a central role, distinguished by a Flemish-like care for detail and a deep psychological investigation. Sidoli immortalized historical and worldly figures, from the famous Buffalo Bill pastel (1905) to the portrait of Giosuè Carducci, up to the numerous commissions for Italian and European aristocracy. Precisely through this genre, around the 1930s and 1940s, his style bore witness to a significant approach toward the atmospheres of Magical Realism. In this period his painting, though anchored in reality, became more rarefied and hushed; the precision of the mark and the crystal-clear light conferred on his subjects a solemn stillness and an almost timeless fixity, never abandoning, however, that chromatic vivacity, a living heritage of his Paris years, which prevents the subject from hardening into mere metaphysicality, keeping it alive with color. Besides the intense portrait and religious activity — culminating in the frescoes for the Corpus Domini church in Piacenza — Sidoli exhibited his works in notable settings, such as the Paris Salons and a solo show at the City Hall of Bologna in 1933. His stylistic evolution, aimed at a synthesis between Victorian verism and the inquietudes of the Twentieth Century, is today documented in important public collections. The most substantial core of his works is housed at the Galleria d’Arte Moderna "Ricci Oddi" in Piacenza, but his paintings also appear in the Galleria d’Arte Moderna of Bologna and in international institutions such as the museums of Strasbourg and Biarritz. DESCRIPTION "Portrait of an Old Beggar", oil on panel, 45x35 cm, datable to the 1920s, signed on the back. It depicts a half-length portrait of an elderly man, three-quarters turned, looking to the right. The subject’s face, marked by deep wrinkles and partly in shadow, is dominated by a thick, long, disordered white beard that emphasizes a lived-in character. The man wears humble, worn clothing, consisting of a heavy brown, earth-toned jacket and a wide-brimmed, shabby hat, deformed by use. From a compositional standpoint, the canvas is built through a skilful interplay of color and light and shade: the palette relies on warm tones, with a predominance of ochres and browns, contrasted by lighter brushstrokes and touches of blue-gray visible especially in the undefined background. The light strikes the right side of the face transversely and fractures among the clumps of the beard, returning great three-dimensionality and visual dynamism to the figure. The brushstroke moves away from miniature-like precision to become dense, tactile, rapid, and strongly vibrant. This energetic painting mode perfectly embodies the artistic phase inaugurated by Nazzareno Sidoli with his definitive return to Piacenza in 1920, a period in which his painting oriented toward a sincere and pulsating investigation of the truth of everyday reality. The portrait thus stands as a fundamental hinge in the artist’s production and poetics, superbly synthesizing his formative experiences. In the work, the solid construction of Lombard naturalism, learned during the academy years, coexists with the post-Impressionist chromatic vivacity acquired during long and fruitful stays in Paris. Although the painting precedes the later evolution of the 1930s and 1940s toward the more rarefied and still atmospheres of Magical Realism, it already exhibits the deep psychological introspection that makes the portrait genre central in Sidoli’s career. Through this balance between the heritage of Eighteenth/Nineteenth-Century verismo and the luminous inquietudes of the Twentieth Century, the painter endows an marginalized figure with extraordinary dignity and a human presence pulsating with color and life. CONDITION REPORT Good overall condition. The work is intact in all parts with lively and legible chroma and brushwork. The photo of the painting placed in an environment has been generated with artificial intelligence and should be considered purely illustrative. Only the remaining photos, which faithfully show the object and its characteristics, both in general and in detail, are to be considered authoritative. Tracked and insured shipping with proper packaging.
