Alle Auktionen / Schmuck und Edelsteine / Necklace w/ Inuit Walrus Ivory Harpoon Head Pendant, White Heart Trade Beads

Native American, Inuit. A weathered walrus ivory harpoon head, its blade slot and line hole still crisp, now strung as a wearable pendant. The tapered point rises from a bifurcated tang cut to seat a socketed foreshaft, with a rectangular lashing slot and a narrow side channel once fitted with a ground stone or metal end blade. Honeyed patina and fine longitudinal grain mark the dense outer tusk. Flanking it on a modern toggle-knotted cord are glass trade beads: two opaque red and two black "white heart" types, whose colored glass is layered over an opaque white core, together with four sky-blue drawn beads. Such harpoon heads were the working end of the toggling sea mammal hunt, driven into walrus or seal so the head pivoted crosswise beneath the hide and held fast. The toggling harpoon is one of the Arctic's defining technologies. Unlike a barbed point, which holds by friction alone, a toggling head detaches from its foreshaft on impact and rotates beneath the blubber layer, anchoring the line against the animal's own strength. Walrus ivory supplied the ideal stock: dense, shock-absorbing, and abundant wherever the herds hauled out. Hunters along the Bering Strait and the Seward Peninsula carved and recarved these heads over generations, and archaeologists use their changing slot and spur profiles as chronological markers for the Old Bering Sea, Punuk, and Thule horizons. "White heart" beads are a diagnostic of the North American fur and whaling trade. Drawn in Venice and later in Bohemia, they carry a translucent red or dark outer glass over an opaque white core visible at the cut ends, a construction that stretched costly colorant over cheap glass. Their appearance in Alaskan assemblages tracks the arrival of Russian, then American, trading vessels through the 19th century.
