Alle Auktionen / Antike Kunst / Neolithic Stone Huge exceptional disc-shaped puzzle

Stone perforated discoid disk, probably sandstone, discovered in the vicinity of Auxerre, in the Yonne department (Burgundy, France) in the 1970s. Characteristics: * Diameter: 23 cm * Central perforation: 4 cm * Maximum thickness: 3 cm * Edge thickness: up to 1 mm * Weight: 1255 g * Material: stone, probably sandstone * Provenance: Auxerrois, France History and use: This type of perforated disk is traditionally known as the “discoid puzzle.” According to the hypothesis of use as a weapon, the disk was mounted on a wooden handle through its central perforation, allowing it to be used to strike blows in combat or for hunting. Its circular shape, its heavily thinned edges, and its slightly biconical perforation recall several prehistoric specimens studied by archaeologists, notably in the Yonne. Archaeological references: Perforated disks comparable to this have been discovered in the Yonne, notably at Rigny-le-Ferron, in the Forest of Othe, where an example with a 16 cm diameter has been cataloged. These discoveries are documented in the Bulletin de la Société préhistorique française, notably by René Joffroy in 1970. State of preservation: Beautiful piece displaying a brown-reddish patina, with a few ancient nicks along the rim and a recent nick when it was probably unearthed. A very interesting and very rare collectible object.
