epal, Bhatgaon, Jaya Ranajit Malla (1722-1769), Mohar, NS 842, Obv. conch (Śankha) and wheel (cakra) in central circle, a bow to right and five arrows to left, legend, Śrī Śrī Jaya Rana-, flowers in field, four dots to upper left of the syllable ja, Rev. inverted central triangle contains elephant goad (ankuśa) and noose (pāśa), to left of triangle lotus flower (padma) and to right mace (gada), legend continues, jit Malla Deva 842, three dots to the lower left of the syllable ma, 5.40g, 9h (RGV 563), slight doubling to obverse, worn, about very fine Provenance The Nicholas Rhodes Collection of Nepalese Coins and Medals: Part Two Karl Gabrisch, Baldwin, Hong Kong, Auction 40, 1 September 2005, lot 113 [part] This Mohar is a close copy to the ones struck in the name of Chakravartendra Malla of Kathmandu (RGV 264), described above. While in the case of Chakravartendra, the design of the coin has been considered as inauspicious, since this king died the same year as his coronation. D. Wright (1877, p. 220) reports the belief that the water into which such a coin is dipped possesses the quality of ensuring a speedy delivery in child-bed. Subject to 20% VAT on Buyer’s Premium.
