Coin set with a complete silver Lion Dollar from the VOC wreck 'De Campen I' struck in 1626. The Royal Dutch Mint / Theo Peters released official promotion and thematic sets in 1995 surrounding the treasures from this VOC wreck De Campen. On 12 October 1627 De Campen, with six other ships, sets course for Batavia. It is his first voyage, but also his last. A powerful storm drives the Kampen to disaster on 23 October 1627 off the treacherous Needles near the Isle of Wight. The 160 soldiers, sailors and merchants manage to land. Only two chests of the total cargo can be saved. In 1979 the wreck is found. Not much remains of the ship. An expedition finds among the wreckage, debris and lead ingots as many as about 8,000 coins, including many reales, Lion Dollars and half-Lion Dollars. The Lion Dollar is one of the oldest silver 'crown-size' coins in the world and has served as a model for many coins in as many countries. The Lion Dollar is the first coin autonomously minted by the Seven Provinces. The Lion Dollar stands for the independence of the Seven Provinces that resisted the power of their Spanish overlord and is a symbol of strength through unity. By setting the exchange rate of the Lion Dollar 3 stuivers higher than the silver content at issue in 1575, this coin contributed part of the capital needed to finance the Eighty Years' War. What is unique about the find in the Campen is that there are whole and half Lion Dollars from as many as seven different provinces. The mintage of the coin set 'De Campen I' is 900 pieces;. A numbered certificate (893) is present. See images for your own impression. Set will be sent by registered mail.
