The world has only just begun to understand the power of the airplane. What a few years earlier was mainly a military development is starting to grow into a new form of transportation that can connect countries and cities. The Netherlands already has its own airline. In 1919, KLM – Royal Dutch Airlines – is founded. The goal is ambitious: to connect the Netherlands with other countries from the air and to build a reliable commercial airline service. On 17 May 1920, the moment arrives. An airplane from KLM departs from London for the first official KLM flight to Amsterdam. On board is a small group of passengers and mail. The aircraft is a de Havilland DH.16, a four-seat plane that is specially deployed for the new route. After the flight from England, the aircraft arrives in Amsterdam. Dutch commercial aviation has begun. What in 1920 was still a remarkable and adventurous undertaking would grow into a global network. Aviation changes the way people travel and the way countries are connected with each other. The first KLM flight thus forms an important chapter in the history of both the Netherlands and international aviation. The heart of this special Coincard is formed by a Dutch 1 cent coin from 1920.
