Netherlands - North Brabant

Rare and spectacular eighteenth-century military and topographic map of the siege of Bergen op Zoom, literally titled "PLAN DES ATTAQUES DE BERG-OP-ZOOM EN 1747." This extraordinary copperplate engraving in copper was made in Paris by the celebrated geographer and king's military engineer Georges-Louis Le Rouge (1712–1790) and published in 1747 within his renowned military collection entitled Théâtre de la dernière guerre en Flandres, aimed at documenting the complex French military operations during the War of the Austrian Succession. The cartographic composition adopts a scenographic visual solution typical of the Baroque, in which the detailed star-shaped urban plan of the fortress, with its formidable fortifications designed by the famous architect Menno van Coehoorn, appears drawn on a large parchment sheet artificially unrolled at the center of the plate. Below and to the sides of this central sheet unfolds the general map of the surroundings and the defensive lines of the region, integrated with detailed panels focused on the individual hot fronts of the attack, such as the famous Coehorn Bastion and Fort Roverf. The bottom right corner hosts a magnificent allegorical Baroque cartouche figurative with rocks and soldiers framing the official title. Printed on sturdy period rag paper, this sheet represents a document of the highest historical and collection value, highly sought after by enthusiasts of military engineering and 18th-century military history.
