Front: Crowned NEDERLAND between two oak branches - 1908 Reverse: 5 cents between two bound orange branches. Material: Copper-Nickel Cu-Ni Weight: 4.51 grams Reference: Schulman 913 Quality: MintState Extra info Because the round stiver was formerly almost indistinguishable from the quarter, it was sometimes issued at night as 25 cents. Therefore this infamous stiver was also nicknamed the 'night quarter' in common parlance. To prevent these shady practices, a new square stiver was introduced in 1913. Thus there was no possibility of confusion even at night. This lot is offered in our special SSA Numistrust selection auction, this special 6th auction runs until the last Tuesday of the month.
