Netherlands, s-Heerenberg Duit 1628 (No reserve price)

Stevensweert – Duit 1628 – Gigot – Very rare Graafschap Bergh – Mints of Stevensweert – 1628 A particularly attractive and very rare duit from 1628, minted in Stevensweert and attributed to the Gigot minting. This historical copper coin forms an interesting testimony to regional coin production in the early seventeenth century. The distinctive design, the special inscription, and the historical significance of the minting location make this issue a sought-after collectible. Historical background Stevensweert holds a special place in Dutch numismatic history. The town originally lay on an island in the Meuse and, due to its strategic location, had a turbulent history. The Counts of Bergh not only minted coins in ’s-Heerenberg, but were also involved in minting activities in Hedel, Stevensweert and Harderwijk. These regional mints played an important role in the monetary landscape of the seventeenth century, in which various princes exercised their own minting rights. The minting of Stevensweert thus forms a fascinating part of the history of private and territorial coinage in the Low Countries. Obverse Within an elegant tulip wreath with a chain motif lies the inscription, split across three lines: SST / INSV / LA This inscription refers to the Latin Sancti Stephani Insula, which can be translated as ‘Island of Saint Stephen’. The designation directly references Stevensweert’s original geographic location as an island in the Meuse, forming a special historical reference to the minting place. Reverse A crowned heraldic shield with a clawed lion, surrounded by a partial tulip wreath. The edge of the shield is adorned with small and large roundels, so-called bezanten. These decorative elements give the heraldic design its characteristic appearance. Rarity and collecting value The Gigot duit from 1628 belongs to the very rare coin issues of Stevensweert. The combination of the distinctive minting place, the recognizable heraldic representation, and the historical connection with the Counts of Bergh makes this coin particularly interesting for specialized collectors. For enthusiasts of Dutch regional numismatic history, this issue represents a rare remnant of a period in which minting rights, territorial autonomy, and economic interests were closely intertwined. A very rare and historically significant duit from 1628, originating from one of the special mints on the Meuse. ⸻ Specifications * Mint place: Stevensweert * Year: 1628 * Denomination: Duit * Attribution: Gigot * Territory: Graafschap Bergh * Material: Copper * Rarity: Very rare
