NEWMAN (Arnold) — Arnold Newman Humlebæk, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, 2002. In-4, paperback, cover illustrated with a famous portrait of Pablo Picasso, 64 pp., numerous black-and-white photographic reproductions and a few in color. This is indeed the catalog published by the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in 2002, and not an edition from the 1990s. Arnold Newman’s official bibliography lists this edition as containing a preface by Poul Erik Tøjner, an essay by Pierre Borhan, and an essay by Lars Schwander. The Smithsonian confirms the colation: 64 pages, illustrations (some in color), portraits, 26 cm, dated 2002. The book is now out of print with the publisher/distributor. Its bibliographic entry lists 64 pages, 5 color illustrations, and 23 black-and-white illustrations, with the ISBN 978-87-90029-71-5. It is a fine monographic catalog of Arnold Newman (1918–2006), one of the masters of 20th-century American portrait photography and a key figure in “environmental portraiture”: the subject is photographed in a carefully constructed space that plays a direct role in the portrait. The selection is particularly appealing for an art bookstore: it notably features Pablo Picasso, Piet Mondrian, John Sloan, Igor Stravinsky, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, Marilyn Monroe, Georgia O’Keeffe, and others. The photographs you show by John Sloan (1941) and Piet Mondrian (1942) are very representative of this style of Newman’s, in which the studio and the objects become almost as important as the subject. In good to very good overall condition. Cover is slightly yellowed, with a few small marks and scuffs; there is a small crease in the upper right corner of the front cover; there are slight signs of wear. The spine and binding appear sturdy. The interior is fresh and clean, and the photographs are well preserved.
