Born around 1938 in the remote desert region of Western Australia, she grew up living a traditional desert life before travelling with her family to the settlements of Papunya and later Kintore. She began painting for Papunya Tula Artists in the mid-1990s and developed a highly recognisable visual language characterised by strong, rhythmic forms, bold fields of colour and repeated motifs relating to women, ceremony and Country. In this work, the roundels depict Wirrulnga, a rockhole situated within a small rocky outcrop east of Kiwirrkurra Community in Western Australia. In ancestral times, a group of women camped at Wirrulnga before continuing their journey northeast towards Wilkinkarra (Lake Mackay). Wirrulnga is closely associated with birth. The forms adjacent to the roundels represent the extended shape of a pregnant woman of the Napaltjarri kinship subsection who gave birth at the site, while other forms evoke the sandhills that surround the area. Through her distinctive arrangement of bold, interconnected forms, Napurrula evokes both the physical features of the desert landscape and the ancestral narratives embedded within it, creating a powerful expression of Country and cultural memory. © NINGURA NAPURRULA / Copyright Agency, 2026
