Jens Harald Quistgaard for Nissen Trævarefabrik – Teak Nesting Table / Side Table – Danish Modern – 1960s Very handsome and relatively rare Danish teak side table, designed by the renowned Danish designer Jens Harald Quistgaard (1919–2008) and produced for Nissen Trævarefabrik, Denmark, circa the 1960s. The 4 legs can be unscrewed for safe shipping when packaged this way. This table originally formed the largest piece of an ingenious three-piece nesting set. The two smaller tables could be slid under the large one, creating a particularly practical and space-saving composition. Here we are offering only the large table. Thanks to its elegant proportions and height, it functions excellently as a standalone piece of furniture as well, for example as a side table, console table, entry table or coffee table. Characteristically Danish Modern design The table is crafted from beautiful teak with a warm reddish to golden-brown hue and a lovely natural wood grain. The surface has not been re-waxed to preserve the age. The long, elongated top has a pronounced sculptural form. The subtly raised and profiled edge curves upwards at both ends and features integrated handles. This makes the top surface resemble an elegant serving tray. The four long, round, beautifully tapering legs give the table a light and refined appearance and are characteristic of Scandinavian furniture design from this period. The design combines functionality with a particularly balanced form: simple at first glance, yet with fine details in the line, construction, and woodwork. Originally part of a nesting set On the underside are the original wooden construction and guide components belonging to the nesting system. The two smaller tables could be slid underneath. This construction makes the original concept of the three-piece set clearly recognizable, even though the two smaller pieces are not included in this offering. A nearly identical piece is also described by the Dutch vintage-design dealer Decennia Design as a Jens Harald Quistgaard side table for Nissen Trævarefabrik from the 1960s. The listed dimensions of 80 × 39.5 × 52 cm closely match this piece. Specifications Designer: Jens Harald Quistgaard (1919–2008) Manufacturer: Nissen Trævarefabrik Denmark Period: 1960s Origin: Denmark Style: Danish Modern / Scandinavian Modern / Mid-Century Modern Material: teak Edition: largest table of the nesting-table set Dimensions: H 52 cm × W 80 cm × D 39 cm Weight: 3600 grams Special features: profiled raised edge, two integrated handles, rounded tapered legs, and original components for the smaller nesting tables. Condition The table is in a beautiful vintage condition, with normal age- and use-related signs consistent with an authentic piece of furniture from this period. The warm color and natural wood grain of the teak are nicely preserved. Any small signs of wear contribute to the original vintage character and are visible in the photos. Photos are an important part of the condition description. A particularly elegant and functional piece of Danish Mid-Century Modern design, which thanks to its slim form and warm teak appearance works well in both a classic Danish Modern interior and a contemporary Scandinavian or Japandi setting. This item is shipped as a parcel with the legs shipped separately for smart shipping, safely packed and insured with track and trace. The accessories shown are only for photos and are not included in the sale; the coffee table is the item being offered. Comparable piece for sale at Decennia Design for €695
