Noire et lacérée Antoni Tàpies

Noire et lacérée Antoni Tàpies

• A striking material panel from the most significant creative phase of the foremost artist of the Spanish Informel movement • A successful harmony of archaic materiality, expressive gesture and spiritual depth • In private ownership for over 40 years Antoni Tàpies’ epoch-making material works date from 1954 onwards. It almost seems as though it was only from this point onwards that the Catalan artist found a visual language suited to him. ‘Noire et lacérée’ from 1979 is an extremely typical example of this. In a sculptural base made from a mixture of sand, marble dust and bone glue, Tàpies creates indentations, scrapes and impressions through rapid, dynamic working processes. In this instance, a broad black brushstroke is applied over impulsively made scratches and incisions on a surface rendered in a vibrant grey. As if one had scratched into desert sand, the materiality and colour of the sand emerge and become an essential element of the composition. The title ‘Noire et lacérée’ roughly translates as ‘Black and torn/tattered’ and suggests that the artist does not intend to pin the work down to a specific pictorial message. Rather, it is the presence of materiality that becomes the primary criterion for the image’s expressive power and communicative force. The rich surface textures become the actual visual event. Despite this strong focus on the materiality of the paintings, Tàpies’ artistic intent is always oriented towards spiritual values. His fundamental attitude is characterised by a profound seriousness, reflecting Mediterranean mysticism and the Spanish penchant for the cryptic. | 1923 - Barcelona - 2012 | Zeitgenössische Kunst | Gemälde | Nummer: 26x1891 | Provenance: Atelier des Künstlers; Galería Maeght, Barcelona, verso auf der Rückwand mit dem Etikett; Galerie Maeght, Paris, verso auf der Rückwand mit dem Etikett; Galerie Maeght-Lelong, Zürich; Privatsammlung Klaus Lauer, Badenweiler; Galerie Meyer-Ellinger, Frankfurt; Privatsammlung, Hessen, 1985 bei Vorgenannter erworben.
