The lamp in question can be reliably linked to Italy in the late 19th century and the very first years of the 20th, in the so-called Umbertine period (1878–1900), fully embedded in the broader eclectic European mood. In these decades domestic lighting based on mineral oil (petroleum/kerosene) was still a widespread solution, especially in bourgeois and rural homes, before the definitive rise of electric lighting. Lamps were no longer mere functional objects but pieces of furnishing, often inspired by historicist repertoires: naturalism, simplified Rococo taste, Baroque and Neo-Renaissance revivals. This is an oil lamp for wall mounting or for placing on a surface, with a shell-shaped metal reflector, designed to: · amplify and direct the light · protect the wall from soot This dual function was typical of wall lamps for domestic and semi-industrial use. The transparent glass reservoir features: · highlighted relief decorations obtained by molding · a central structural band, intended to house the mounting bracket This type of pressed glass is typical of late 19th-century serial production, often manufactured in glassworks in Northern Italy or the Central European area (Bohemia, Austria), then assembled locally. The diameter of 9 cm and the contained height indicate a lamp of practical use, not monumental, probably intended for: · kitchens · corridors · service areas shops The metal burner (copper-zinc alloy with verdeantique green oxidations): is of the flat wick type equipped with a side regulating wheel consistent with Italian and European models between 1880 and 1905 The stamped tin reflector: has a stylized shell shape, a very common element in Umbertine eclecticism shows a patina darkened/oxidized in keeping with the age has holes for potential wall mounting From a functional point of view: increases luminous efficiency protects the wall from soot From an aesthetic point of view: provides a decorative character while remaining sober Missing element: glass chimney The absence of the glass chimney, however, is a common omission and does not compromise: authenticity historical legibility of the object Original from the period, not restored, with: authentic patina on metal oxidations consistent with age intact glass, with no evident breaks deficiency of the glass chimney · normal signs of wear compatible with more than a century of life Dimensions: · Base to wick height: 13 cm · Base to reflector top height: 20 cm · Reservoir diameter: 9 cm
