NYURAPAYIA NAMPITJINPA (MRS BENNETT), Yumarra, 2001

NYURAPAYIA NAMPITJINPA (MRS BENNETT) Pintupi language, c.1935 - 2013 Yumarra, 2001 acrylic on linen 122 x 152.5 cm bears inscription verso: Papunya Tula Artists, NN0111173, 153x122, Nyurapayia Nampitjinpa; Scott Livesey Art Dealer stamped verso PROVENANCE Papunya Tula Artists, Northern Territory, Cat No. NN0111173 Scott Livesey Galleries, Victoria The Collection of Barbara Hansen, Victoria Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Papunya Tula Artists Painted at Kintore in 2001, this painting depicts designs associated with the travels of a group of women to the rockhole site of Yumarra, near Tjukurla in Western Australia. The women had journeyed from Punkilpirri, a large permanent water site north-west of Docker River in the Walter James Range, and later continued north through Tjukurla and Tjalili. Along the way they gathered kampurarrpa (desert raisin, Solanum centrale) and mangata (quandong), both of which grow in this country. They also ground the seeds of the rat-tail goosefoot, known as kalpari, to make damper. Nyurapayia Nampitjinpa, widely known as Mrs Bennett, was born around 1935 at Yumarra, north of Docker River, and grew up in the desert country of the Western Australia and Northern Territory border region, living a nomadic life before settling at Kintore. She inherited her mother's Dreamings, which connect to the rockholes at Yumarra, Wantjunga and Tjalili and to the large permanent waters at Pukara, Ngalkinginga and Munkara. She married John John Bennett Tjapangati (c.1930 to 2002), an early painter with Papunya Tula Artists, and the couple were both respected ngangkari, or traditional healers. Mrs Bennett came to painting through her leadership of the Haasts Bluff/Kintore Women's Painting Camp in 1994, a gathering that opened the way for women of the region to paint in their own right. She developed a free and distinctive idiom, setting concentric forms and fine black contour lines against pale yellows and creams, in marked contrast to the precise dotting favoured by many of her Kintore contemporaries. In 2001, the year this work was painted, she was named among Australia's fifty most collectable artists by Australian Art Collector. She passed away in January 2013 near her country at Punkilpirri. © NYURAPAYIA NAMPITJINPA / Copyright Agency, 2026
