Middle East / Maghreb – Honey-glazed terra-cotta oil lamp, 19th century Description of the lot : Folk art oil lamp in terracotta covered with a brown-honey lead glaze. The circular, bowl-shaped reservoir is topped by a tubular neck for filling and flanked by a solid handle linking the rim to the neck. The elongated, open spout bears traces of combustion and carbonisation from the use of the wick. Traditional artisanal production, part of the typology of domestic lamps of the Maghreb (Berber folk art) or the Ottoman Middle East. Origin : Middle East / Maghreb (Berber folk art / Ottoman) Period : 19th century Material : Glazed terracotta / glazed Dimensions : Height : ~3.5 cm | Length : ~12.5 cm | Reservoir diameter : ~6.5 cm Weight : 195 g Condition report : Lovely overall patina of age with glaze wear. Ancient carbonisation traces and period deposits at the level of the wick channel. Edge of the central bowl worn/chipped from intensive use, revealing the underlying terracotta.
