Rare 19th-century commemorative portrait of Johannes Bake (1834-1866) in its original Biedermeier frame with antique convex glass, made in Paris, ca. 1860-1865, with provenance on the back: a paper label from the photography studio Maison de Confiance LEGROS. A fully documented early photograph. A manually retouched portrait (photographie retouchée) of the young Dutch theologian Johannes Bake (Leiden, 3 March 1834 - Eaux-Bonnes, 9 July 1866). The portrait sits on the boundary between early photographic technique and painting. The base is an authentic salt print or albumen print. At the time it was finely retouched in the studio with color pigments (retouché). This gives the face, clothing and background depth and liveliness. The unique back provides the full provenance of the photo and explanations about the depicted young man. It is a historical document in itself. The back contains the original large studio label from the renowned French photo studio Maison de Confiance LEGROS, then located in the heart of Paris (Palais-Royal, Galerie de Valois, No. 116). The label proudly advertises medals won with ‘Photographie et Daugerréotype’ and includes a historically interesting ‘Avis Important’ about reordering portraits from the archive. The portrait number is (left in the middle) handwritten (No 9879). On the bottom right the printer of the label is listed, Charles de Mourges frères. Additionally the reverse is provided with unique, handwritten genealogical notes by the Bake family: - “brother of grandfather Bake. Died in France of tuberculosis” - the full birth and death details of Johannes Bake, including the place of death (the French spa town Eaux-Bonnes where he succumbed to TB at age 32). - a reference to the official family tree: “See biography in the work ‘Genealogische aanteekeningen betreffende de familie Bake, 1941, pag 149-152’”. The portrait is housed in the original, black-painted oval wooden frame, with a brass inner rim. Unique is that the original, precious antique convex glass is completely intact and undamaged. This bulged glass (visible in the photo by the distorted square reflection of the pane) ensures that the vulnerable paint layers on the photo have remained perfectly conserved after more than 160 years. The photograph is in very good, clear condition with beautifully preserved colors. In the top left there is a slight water stain that does not touch the portrait itself. The antique glass is scratch-free. The wooden frame shows minimal signs of aging. The label and the handwritten text on the back are well preserved and easily legible.
