"Oracle of Decius Mus". A Flemish tapestry depicting the historical scenery with the Roman consul Publius Decius Mus seeking advice from Aruspices before a war, surrounded by a highly decorative wide border depicting classical Baroque ornaments. Publius Decius Mus was a real Roman consul who fought during the Second Latin War in 340 BC. The "Oracle of Decius Mus" refers to an iconic scene from the monumental Decius Mus Cycle—a famous series of paintings and tapestry designs created by Flemish Baroque master Peter Paul Rubens(1577-1640) between 1616 and 1618. Manufactory of Jan Raes the Elder(Brussels 1574-1651), marked B B(at bottom edge) for Brussels and maker's mark(at the right edge) IFR for Jan I Raes the elder. The tapestry is lined and mounted with vertical strips and velcro for professional hanging. Executed in wool and silk. Brussels, early 17th century. 432 x 332 cm.
