ORIGINAL MR. PEANUT ROASTER C. 1910s-1920s A.G. Deer Co. "Royal" No. 5 Commercial Coffee Roaster. An impressive early commercial coffee roasting machine manufactured by A.G. Deer in Hornell, New York. This retains its original identification plate, reading "Royal Coffee Roaster Style 5 Capacity 25 lbs. Serial No. 2846". Heavy cast iron construction with circular roasting drum, large hand wheel, ornate cast floral decorations and cast "Royal" and manufacturer markings throughout. The front retains its cast metal "Planet National Chocolate Co." attachment with additional removable Royal component. Designed for use by early grocery, confectionery, and general store merchants to roast coffee in house, the machine is now a standing example of early American commercial food processing equipment. These particular models were also used in the roasting of peanuts with the addition of a side hopper for that application. It is substantial in scale and exceptionally decorative for an industrial machine, with elaborate castings and a strong, original surface. CONDITION: It is in as-found condition, with surface oxidation and wear consistent with age and commercial application. Appears mostly complete as shown, although operational condition and completeness of internal components have not been verified. A visually impressive piece with particularly strong crossover appeal to country store, coffee, general store, advertising, and early industrial equipment collectors, as well as those of Mr. Peanut. A great candidate for restoration or a wonderful display piece as-is. The top marquee is very difficult to find, and new glass plates could read "Coffee" and/or "Peanuts".
