Ottoman Empire Silver Ring with Carnelian Intaglio with Quadruped

Very impressive antique Ottoman Empire Islamic silver ring. The ring has a large square bezel set with a carnelian intaglio depicting a stylised animal, standing to left. The substantial silver ring is elaborately decorated with engraved vegetal and geometric ornamentation along the shoulders and sides. The shoulders are further embellished with appliqué elements forming stylised scrollwork and knot-like motifs. The bezel is framed by a beaded border. The underside of the bezel is engraved with a hidden decorative scene enclosed within a rectangle divided by diagonal lines, forming four triangular compartments filled with small symbolic motifs. This engraving is concealed when the ring is worn and would only have been visible to the wearer. -> Hidden engravings beneath the bezel are occasionally encountered on Ottoman rings and may have held symbolic or talismanic meaning known only to the owner.
