Alle Auktionen / Sonstige / Pedro Orrente (1580-1645), Circle of - Christ before Caiaphas - XL

- Oil on canvas. Stretched canvas. Exceptional state of preservation. - This composition, articulated through a severe venetian-caravaggesque tenebrism, firmly belongs to the immediate milieu of Pedro de Orrente (1580–1645), nicknamed the “Spanish Bassano.” The work bears the assimilation of the naturalist language Orrente internalized during his stay in Italy alongside Leandro Bassano, evident here in the anatomical treatment of the Ecce Homo — with dense modeling and strongly contrasted light modeling — and in the garish concentration of monumental figures in a foreground that is crowded and at the edge of the space. The typological characterization of the members of the Sanhedrin and the surrounding soldiers stands out, where the execution of the tunics, the richly draped Oriental turbans, and the metallic reflection on the iron cuirass unambiguously recall the formal and iconographic repertoire of Orrente’s workshop in the first third of the 17th century. From a technical standpoint, the painted mass reveals a dark ground-imprimatura of Sevillian earth (“almagra”), on which the artisan applies brief, impastoed brushstrokes to capture the light qualities and the roughness of the elderly faces. The dramatic tension of the judgment before the step or lower parapet — a device that places the scene at the very limit of the viewer’s space — connects with devotional productions produced by Orrente’s closest collaborators and followers in the Valencia, Toledo, and Murcia centers. The mastery shown in resolving the flashes of the purple cloak, the texture of the rope-bound wrists, and the resigned expression of the Redeemer attest to the brush of a master trained in the direct shadow of Orrente’s workshop, fully aware of the lessons of Counter-Reformation chiaroscuro. - Image dimensions without frame: 135 x 112 cm At Montbaron Gallery, we are pleased to offer our clients an exclusive selection of artworks, all of which are unique, original, and unrepeatable.
