PEPAI CARROLL JANGALA Pitjantjatjara language, c.1950 - 2021 Walungurru, 2012 & Walungurru, 2012 acrylic on canvas 50 x 61 cm & 50.5 x 50.5 cm bears inscription verso: Pepai Carroll, 2012, Ernabella Arts,#148-12, 510x510 & Pepai Carroll, 2012, Ernabella Arts, #190-12, 510x600 PROVENANCE Ernabella Arts, South Australia, Cat No. 148-12 & 190-12 Private Collection, South Australia Accompanied by certificates of authenticity from Ernabella Arts The title Walungurru, depicts the sand-dune country near Kintore that is Carroll's father's country and the place his practice continually returns to. The certificate accompanying each work records the Tjukurrpa held there: "The Wanampi is looking for that man, he did the wrong thing, and he is running into sand hill country. The Wanampi made that road, and he brought the water with him. There was no water here before, but it is still there now." For Carroll, who lived for decades at Ernabella, several hundred kilometres south of this country, the recurring title works as an act of retrieval, calling the country into presence through paint. Carroll's path to painting was neither direct nor early. Born at Haasts Bluff and educated between Papunya and Areyonga, he came to Ernabella as a young man, working through decades of community roles, including station fencing, the community office, and as chairperson, before directing Nganampa Health and serving as Community Constable until illness ended that career in 2006. He began painting only in 2009 and ceramics in 2011, and led the Watiku men's ceramics workshop he founded that year, drawing a new generation of men into the art centre. A 2014 finalist placing in the Indigenous Ceramic Art Award preceded a run of major exhibitions, including a 2015 solo debut at Alcaston Gallery and inclusion in Tarnanthi and the 2016 Adelaide Biennial Magic Object. His work is held in the National Gallery of Victoria, the Art Gallery of South Australia, the Araluen Collection and Artbank. © PEPAI CARROLL / Copyright Agency, 2026
