The motif remains legible: a cliff borders the left, a path descends toward the water, a village tightens in yellow and blue touches, a low building pierced by an arch pushes into the sea. The sky opens up into broad fields of pale blue, yellow, and green. The affinity with Nicolas de Staël is real. The landscape is not described, it is built. The masses of color stand in for ground, wall, reflection, and sky. The blue structures, the yellow lights, the green unites. The brushwork remains visible, broad in the sky and water, tighter in the village. A restrained abstraction still tethered to place. Details and material Thick paper shows through in the lighter areas. The impastos concentrate on the cliff, the building, and the village. The washes open the horizon. From afar, a coastline. Up close, an assembly of planes. Artist Peter Waterschoot (1969–2022) was a Belgian painter whose work, at the crossroads of lyrical abstraction and poetic figuration, is distinguished by a constant search for light and balance. His compositions, often realized on thick paper, testify to mastery of gesture and rare chromatic sensibility. Provenance and collector interest This 1996 work is part of the transitional phase in which Waterschoot refined his pictorial language. Dated and signed, it provides a valuable testimony of this pivotal period.
