Petrus Wesseling - Vetera romanorum itineraria

- Full title: Vetera romanorum itineraria, sive Antonini Augusti itinerarium Hierosolymitanum et Hieroclis grammatici synecdemus. - Author: Petrus Wesseling (Petro Wesselingio 1692-1764). Dutch linguist and jurist. - Format: Quarto (27 × 21 cm), 762 pp. plus index. Engraved frontispiece; no plates or maps. Title page in red and black with an engraved vignette. Contemporary parchment binding with rich gilding. The front and back covers are decorated with a large gilded coat of arms ("Pallas Medioburg(ensis)" referring to a connection with Middelburg). Spine with five compartments, golden ornaments and leather title label. Condition: signs of wear to the coat of arms, the spine and the edges. Text pages in good condition, only the last 50 pages show discoloration. - Content: The work is a collection of ancient and late antique travel guides, which together provide a view of the geography and road network of the Roman Empire. • Itinerarium Antonini: a road book from the late 3rd/early 4th century with lists of routes, place names and inter-urban distances (in miles) across the entire empire. It served mainly for travel and logistics, possibly for imperial journeys. • Itinerarium Burdigalense (Jerusalem Itinerary): the oldest preserved Christian pilgrimage account, from 333 CE. It describes the land route from Bordeaux to Jerusalem and back via Rome and Milan, with stops, distances and brief mentions of biblical sites. • Synecdemus of Hierocles: a Byzantine list from the 6th century (circa 527–528) of the provinces and over 900 cities of the East Roman Empire, organized by province. More administrative geography than a travel route. The book bundles these texts with extensive commentaries by scholars from the 16th and 17th centuries. For historians and topographers it long remained a standard reference for ancient geography and toponymy.
