PHILIPPINES. Inauguration of the Manila Mint Silver Medal, 1861. Manila Mint. Isabel II. NGC AU-55. Honeycutt-16. Weight: 5.2 gms.; Diameter: 22 mm. By. LM. Obverse: Bust of Isabella II left, legend around "ISABEL 2a. REINA DE LAS ESPANAS"; Reverse: Arms of Manila in wreath, crown above, legend around "INAUGURATION DE LA CASA DE MONEDA DE MANILA", date below "19 DE MARZO/ 1861". This gently circulated example boasts a bold strike with light even wear and plenty of remaining detail. The surfaces exhibit rich mottled slate patina with a slight iridescent sheen. An always popular issue that is sure to be a welcome addition to the next collection it enters. The official establishment of the Manila Mint under Queen Isabel II was done to make production local and to alleviate coin shortages. When production began it marked the first time the name "Filipinas" would appear on the country's coinage. Estimate: $1,500 - $2,000. Provenance: From the Dr. Earl Honeycutt Collection.
