Philips Wouwerman (1619–1668)

This atmospheric painting, created by an 18th-century follower of Philips Wouwerman (1619–1668), closely aligns with the beloved landscapes and horse-riding scenes of the Haarlem master. The composition is dominated by a lively group of riders, horses and cattle, set against a broad landscape with tents and a dramatically lit sky. The white horse at the center of the scene, a frequently recurring motif in Wouwerman’s oeuvre, forms the visual focal point and brings light and dynamism to the composition. Philips Wouwerman was one of the leading Dutch painters of horse, hunt, and landscape scenes from the Golden Age. His work remained especially popular after his death and was collected and imitated throughout the 18th century. This painting forms a characteristic example of that. Ready to Hang! Canvas size: 72 cm length by 53.5 cm width Frame size: 106 cm length by 86 cm width The work comes from an estate. Always kept within the family and appraisal available from Christie's. Condition: The painting is in good condition, but can be cleaned to make the colors come forward more vividly. The back of the canvas has been cleaned in the past for optimal preservation of the canvas (not varnished!). Unfortunately, the frame has sustained some damage due to its size in recent years. At the bottom of the frame a piece has broken off. It can easily be repaired by a restorer. (see photos) In short, a work that has developed patina for its time, but ready to hang.
