Photo album - Two 1926 Travel Photo Albums – RMS Caronia – Brittany

Exceptional pair of original private photograph albums documenting an extensive transatlantic and European journey in 1926. Offered together as one collection, the two albums contain numerous original vintage photographs mounted on black album pages, many accompanied by contemporary handwritten captions identifying places, dates and members of the travelling party. Le RMS Caronia – Cunard Line A particularly interesting part of the collection documents the journey aboard the famous Cunard liner RMS Caronia. The albums include a period photograph of the RMS Caronia as well as numerous photographs taken on board, showing passengers posing and relaxing on deck during the transatlantic crossing. Several members of the travelling party are identified in the albums, providing considerable potential for further genealogical and passenger-list research. Britain An important section documents travel through Britain, with photographs of the travellers as well as monuments, cities, landscapes and everyday scenes. Locations include London, Westminster, Windsor, Hampton Court, Stratford-upon-Avon, York and Edinburgh, among others. The photographs include historic buildings, cathedrals, streets, countryside, informal portraits and scenes of social life, creating a fascinating record of tourism in Britain during the interwar period. France – Paris, Brittany & Mont-Saint-Michel The French part of the journey includes Paris, Versailles, Chartres, Fontainebleau and Chantilly, followed by travel through north-western France and Brittany. Particularly interesting are the photographs documenting Saint-Malo, Paramé and Mont-Saint-Michel, providing atmospheric views of Brittany and the Normandy/Brittany region as it appeared almost a century ago. Paris is represented by numerous photographs of famous monuments and locations, including the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe and Luxembourg Gardens, together with photographs taken at Versailles and during excursions outside the capital. An original 1926 travel archive One of the principal attractions of this collection is that the photographs remain mounted in their original albums and preserved in their original sequence. The albums therefore retain the context of the journey: the ocean crossing, fellow passengers, excursions, sightseeing and everyday social life. The combination of RMS Caronia photographs, identifiable travellers, contemporary handwritten captions and numerous European locations gives the collection significant historical, genealogical and maritime interest.
