Proximate to the Parisian art circles of the late 19th century, he maintained relationships with Edgar Degas and Édouard Manet in particular. He is especially known for his literary illustrations, scenes of Parisian life and landscapes in watercolor. His precise and lively drawing is accompanied by a great sensitivity to attitudes, atmospheres and lighting effects. In his landscapes, he often favors roads, villages, isolated trees and rural architectures, organizing them in compositions that are both natural and highly constructed. This late watercolor, dedicated and dated 1928, testifies to his constant interest in French landscapes and in careful observation of the motif.
