Pierre Loti / Sylvain Sauvage - Madame Chrysanthème - 1936

An exciting vellum edition illustrated with in-text drawings and 12 color plates hors-texte of this travelogue and exotic love story that holds a special place in the writer’s body of work, blending personal memories, descriptions of landscapes, observations of Japanese customs, and meditation on the strangeness of encounters between two cultures - First published in 1887, the novel draws on Pierre Loti’s stay in Japan while he was a naval officer and tells of his temporary marriage to a young Japanese woman named Chrysanthème, an arrangement then possible in the particular context of Japanese ports frequented by foreign sailors - The narrative does not rest on a traditional literary plot based on a lasting passion, but rather on a succession of impressions, daily scenes and tableaux in which the narrator describes his Japanese environment with a blend of fascination, curiosity and distance - Pierre Loti / Sylvain Sauvage - Madame Chrysanthème - 1936 - Calmann-Lévy - 219 Pages.
