Pitcher (3) - tribal - Terracotta - North African

Set of three tribal Imazighen (Berber) ceramic vessels Traditional North African pottery produced by women. Hand-shaped terracotta (no wheel), mineral engobes and natural organic pigments. Condition: Very good, natural patina consistent with their age and rustic firing method. Minor superficial irregularities inherent to handcrafted manufacture. The polychrome, anthropomorphic jars come from the mountainous region of Greater Kabyle (northern Algeria), attributed to the Kabyle culture (Ideqqi). The central ochre-toned jar originates from the Berber tribes of the Rif mountain range (northern Morocco). Period: Mid-20th century (Circa 1950–1970). Historical context: Although these vessels employ morphological and decorative techniques that have remained unchanged since the Neolithic, the excellent preservation of the exterior pigments and the use of more vivid multicolored bases place their manufacture in the second half of the last century, a period of great interest and openness for European ethnographic art collectors. Kabyle Anthropomorphic Jar (Left): A terracotta vessel with burnished red oxide, featuring two symmetrical handles. It presents a geometric diamond decoration with crossed nets, and a zoomorphic/anthropomorphic abstraction oriented toward protecting the home and fertility. Rifean Water Jar (Center): Large ovoide utilitarian piece with a robust rear handle. Finished in natural ochre clay with black geometric markings representing wheat stalks and traditional agricultural symbolism. Festive Polychrome Jar (Right): Modern-influenced piece characterized by a vivid white engobe base with yellow and red friezes. Decorated with sawtooth and triangle motifs (el-Khamsa), an iconic Amazigh pattern to ward off the evil eye. No shipping to the USA or to conflict zones
