Polished Cleoniceras Ammonite Fossil Red and Orange...

Madagascar - Cretaceous Period (Albian) — This superb specimen of Cleoniceras ammonite represents an exceptional fragment of natural history from the Mahajanga Basin in Madagascar. The fossil, dating to the Cretaceous period (Albian stage, about 110 million years ago), has been sectioned and meticulously polished to reveal not only its complex internal structure but above all a spectacular natural iridescence. The shell surface comes alive with vivid flashes of fiery color, a rare phenomenon that testifies to an extraordinary state of preservation. Direct observation of the specimen reveals a logarithmic spiral of notable size, whose smooth surface has a nearly glassy luster. It is on this fossil canvas that nature has painted its most fascinating colors. Streaks of intense red, orange, and gold run along the sutures, drawing almost calligraphic patterns that follow the growth lines of the animal’s internal chambers. These color flashes are not uniform, but create a dynamic play that changes with the angle of light, offering a continually fresh perception of the object. The center of the spiral, or protoconch, stands out for a pearly sheen with cooler tones, from blue to violet, creating an alluring contrast with the dominant warm hues. This incredible iridescence results from a fossilization process known as “exceptional preservation.” Unlike many fossils where the original material has been replaced by minerals, in this Cleoniceras the original aragonite shell is preserved, the same substance that makes up mother-of-pearl. Its microstructure, formed by sub-micrometric lamellar layers, acts as a natural diffraction lattice, splitting white light into its spectral colors. The thickness of these layers determines the reflected color, from red (thicker layers) to blue/purple (thinner layers), giving the specimen its vibrant polychromy. A fossil of such quality transcends mere paleontological value to become a true object of natural art. The combination of perfect geometric form, state of preservation, and rarity of the chromatic phenomenon makes it a collection piece of great value. It is a specimen that beautifully dialogues with refined environments, ideal to be displayed in a library, a study, or as the focal point of a contemporary Wunderkammer. Its prehistoric elegance and intrinsic beauty make it a tangible bridge between the present and a submerged world millions of years ago.
