Precious Vintage White Gold Brooch with Sapphires & Diamonds, 1960s

A large panicle of midnight blue sapphires and sparkling diamonds shines in a glittering light. The sapphires form the mysterious flowers of this precious plant, while the diamonds adorn the white gold stems. The appearance of the brooch is elegant and cool, clear and yet with a touch of playfulness. This aesthetic is typical of 1960s jewellery. White gold and diamonds dominated the fashion of this decade, often combined with just one coloured stone and arranged in rhythmic patterns. The use of baguette-cut diamonds instead of brilliant-cut diamonds is also characteristic, as are the countless fine prongs with spherically rounded ends, which lend the piece of jewellery additional sparkle. This brooch is perfect for wearing in the evening to a ball or reception, where the light accentuates the gemstones in a particularly impressive way. At the time of its creation, it was intended for just such occasions. David Bennet and Daniela Mascetti have illustrated comparable pieces of jewellery such as brooches and bracelets in their work Understanding Jewellery (Woodbridge 2010, p. 414, p. 429 and p. 434f.), which contribute to the dating of this brooch.
