Alle Auktionen / Etnografica / Pyrite Sphere with Mirror Polish and Glittering Crystal...
Huanzala Mine, Ancash Region, Peru — This lot features a pyrite sphere of considerable size and weight, surpassing 5 kg. The specimen was carved from a block of massive pyrite sourced from the famous Huanzala mine in Peru, a site world-renowned for the exceptional quality of its minerals. The sphere stands out for its fascinating aesthetic duality: large areas have been mirror-polished, reflecting the surrounding environment with a metallic sheen, while other surfaces have been left in their natural state, revealing geodes inset with sparkling crystals. Looking closely, the smooth surface displays the pale brass-gold color of pyrite, with a metallic luster so intense as to create a mirrored effect. This impeccable finish is interrupted by irregular cavities, or “vugs,” that open like windows onto the mineral’s internal geologic structure. Inside these depressions, a carpet of innumerable pyrite microcrystals with cubic habit creates a drusy texture that captures and refracts light into thousands of glittering points. The contrast between the smooth, reflective surface and the rough, crystalline one gives the object a visually and tactilely dynamic quality of great value. Pyrite, an iron sulfide (FeS₂), forms in a wide range of geological environments, but the most spectacular specimens, like those from Huanzala, are often associated with hydrothermal deposits. In these conditions, hot, mineral-rich solutions flow through rock fractures, depositing pyrite crystals. The creation of this sphere required skilled craft: a rough block was carefully shaped and then polished to achieve a perfect geometric form, strategically preserving the original crystalline cavities. This process transforms a fragment of geological history into a sculptural work of art. A specimen of this size and origin represents a piece of notable interest to mineral collectors and natural history enthusiasts. Its imposing presence and sophisticated aesthetics make it an exceptional decorative element, perfect for enriching a library, a study, or a contemporary interior. It serves as a focal point, capable of dialoguing with both classical and modern furnishings, and embodies the essence of a Wunderkammer, merging the wonder of nature with human craftsmanship. The surface irregularities, natural cavities, and any microfractures visible, such as the more pronounced line crossing one of the crystal zones, should not be regarded as defects, but rather authentic testimonies of the mineral’s formation process and its intrinsic characteristics. These details authenticate its naturalness and enrich the story the object tells. Technical details Name: Pyrite Classification: Sulfides Provenance: Peru Location or Mine: Huanzala Mine, Huallanca District, Ancash Region Dimensions: 141 x 141 x 141 mm Weight: 5118 g Conditions: The specimen has been carved and polished from a natural block. The cavities and microfractures are intrinsic characteristics of the mineral.
