The composition fully responds to the portrait tradition developed by Ramon Casas, characterized by economy of means, elegance of line and masterful use of charcoal. Its language draws on both the tradition of academic drawing and the cosmopolitan currents he encountered in Paris, as well as the Modernist taste for depicting the contemporary woman. Júlia Peraire was one of Casas’s fundamental models, repeatedly appearing in the artist’s drawings and paintings, in addition to being his wife. In fact, there are several portraits of Júlia by Casas around 1910-1911 executed in charcoal, pencil and related techniques. Elegant half-length female portrait depicting Júlia Peraire dressed according to the sophisticated female fashion of the early 20th century. The sitter is shown facing the viewer, with the face slightly turned and a serene, direct and restrained expression. What stands out especially is the monumental dark hat, wide-brimmed and richly ornamented, dominating the upper part of the composition and creating a strong contrast with the delicacy of the face. The clothing, also dark, is resolved with loose charcoal strokes, with the artist concentrating the greatest degree of definition in the features. The white collar and the small black bow introduce contrast points that visually structure the bust. The drawing treatment combines zones meticulously modeled with others deliberately sketched. The face presents gentle tonal gradations, while the hat, hair and dress are built up with a more vigorous and spontaneous application of charcoal. This alternation between precision and synthesis is one of the most characteristic devices of Casas’s graphic portraiture. The work appears signed and dated in the lower right area. The date seems to correspond to 1911, a particularly significant period in Júlia Peraire’s portrait production. About the author: Ramon Casas i Carbó (Barcelona, 1866-1932) was one of the fundamental figures of Catalan Modernism. Painter, draftsman and poster designer, he achieved particular recognition for his portraits, scenes of modern life and graphic work. His extraordinary command of drawing allowed him to develop an extensive production of charcoal portraits characterized by the apparent spontaneity of the stroke, the capacity for synthesis and notable psychological insight. Júlia Peraire held a particularly relevant place within his oeuvre as a model and domestic partner, being represented by the artist for many years under various portrayals. The MNAC preserves, among other works, a portrait of Júlia dating from around 1920. Presented under glass with a wide black mat and a gold frame with sober, stepped lines. The gold finish provides a classical and elegant contrast against the dark background of the installation, directing visual attention toward the drawing.
