RAREST Herkimer Diamond — 2.80 carats Exceptional clarity...

Exceptional natural 2.80-carat Herkimer Diamond, remarkable for the sharpness of its morphology, its very beautiful transparency and the sophistication of its crystal architecture. This piece immediately stands out with its large natural faces with definite contours, intense vitreous luster, and the impressive play of reflections produced inside the crystal. Its relatively clear structure allows light to penetrate deeply into the specimen before meeting different growth planes, veils and internal structures, creating a remarkable depth effect. Some faces appear almost polished given how clean their geometry is, while directly attesting to the crystal’s natural growth. Despite its particularly compact dimensions, this specimen has a remarkable visual presence and an extremely seductive morphology for a collection. The historical name “Herkimer Diamond” here designates a rare bicone quartz specimen, valued for its natural geometry, its luster, and the particular conditions required for its formation. Characteristics - Collection name: Herkimer Diamond - Mineral nature: Natural bi-terminated quartz - Origin: Pakistan - Weight: 2.80 carats - Dimensions: 8 × 9.3 × 5.4 mm - Morphology: Natural bi-terminated crystal - Color: Colorless - Transparency: Very good transparency, with natural internal structures - Luster: Vitreous, brilliant - Faces: Natural, geometric and highly reflective - Terminations: Natural - Internal structure: Growth planes, veils and natural inclusions - Remark: Remarkable contrast between clarity and internal architecture - Interest: Mineralogical collection, crystallography, loupe observation and macrophotography A Particularly Seductive Transparency One of the main attractions of this specimen lies in its beautiful general clarity. Wide transparent zones allow direct observation of the crystal interior and give it a remarkable sense of depth. Light travels through the piece, successively encounters different faces and internal structures, then returns to the observer as extremely bright reflections. This transparency also highlights the different growth stages visible inside. Rather than masking its history, the clarity allows it to be explored. An Almost Unreal Natural Geometry Observing the piece reveals large flat surfaces separated by clearly defined edges. Some produce wide bright or dark bands depending on their orientation relative to the light source. At first glance, this effect may give the impression of a worked or faceted stone. Yet this is the expression of the crystal’s natural geometry. It is precisely this combination of well-developed natural faces, transparency and double termination that gives these crystals their unique aesthetic. The Rarity of Bi-terminated Growth The formation of a bi-terminated crystal requires specific conditions. To develop terminations at both ends, the crystal must be able to grow with enough space around it. Unlike a crystal whose one end remains directly attached to its matrix, relatively free growth allows expression of terminal faces on both sides. This feature partly explains why collectors have long valued bi-terminated crystals with beautiful geometry. When added to high transparency and well-expressed faces as in this piece, the result becomes especially aesthetic. A True Mini Crystal Construction With only 9.3 mm in its greatest dimension, this specimen is a true mineralogical miniature. Its small volume nevertheless concentrates many details. The different external faces produce a succession of orientation changes that continuously alter how light passes through the crystal. Inside, different planes appear and disappear as the piece is rotated. This phenomenon gives an astonishing sense of volume for such a compact specimen. A Subtle Internal Architecture Unlike some crystals with heavy inclusions, this one retains large transparent zones. Its internal architecture is therefore more subtle. Nevertheless, you can observe different planes and natural structures that traverse the stone locally. Some areas become highly reflective under specific lighting, while others remain almost perfectly transparent. This contrast creates a particularly interesting balance: enough clarity to appreciate the crystal’s depth, but enough complexity to make every angle distinct. A Crystal Shaped by a Long Geological History Such an organized morphology results from a natural crystallization process. During growth, atoms gradually arrange according to the mineral’s crystal structure. The physico-chemical conditions of the environment then determine the speed and manner in which the different faces develop. Variations encountered during growth may leave traces: internal planes, growth changes, natural inclusions or fractures. These features are today part of the specimen’s identity. Each detail thus represents the result of a geological history that cannot be exactly reproduced again. Spectacular Plays of Light Under directional light, the piece becomes particularly expressive. Its large transparent faces can alternately become almost invisible or transform into true mirrors. Some reflections traverse the entire width of the crystal as very sharp light bands. A slight rotation is sufficient to make a reflection disappear and another one appear. This interaction with light explains why physically observing such a specimen generally reveals much more than a single photograph can show. The History of the “Herkimer Diamond” The term “Herkimer Diamond” has a long history in the world of mineral collecting. Historically associated with the famous bi-terminated crystals discovered in Herkimer County and neighboring regions of New York State, their transparency, luster and naturally spectacular geometry led to comparison with diamond. This morphology became particularly famous among collectors. Bi-terminated crystals with comparable characteristics do exist in other parts of the world. The specimen’s actual origin is therefore explicitly indicated in its characteristics to distinguish its geographic origin from this historical collection name. A miniature piece of high aesthetic quality This specimen stands out less by its dimensions than by the visual quality of its natural construction. At 2.80 carats for 8 × 9.3 × 5.4 mm, it concentrates remarkable geometry, beautiful transparency, intense luster, and several internally structures particularly interesting to observe in a very small volume. Under magnification, details become even more evident and turn the piece into a true object of study. Its small size also makes it an excellent specimen for macrophotography, where its faces and light play can be observed at a spectacular scale. A remarkable 2.80-carat bi-terminated Herkimer Diamond, miniature in its dimensions but impressive in its transparency, its geometry and the sophistication of its natural growth — a singular piece for the discerning collector.
