Reliquary - Glass

Magnificent and large antique oval reliquary-theca (7 x 6 cm) in metal finely handcrafted by hand, containing an important relic "Ex Veste" of Saint Margaret of Cortona (1247–1297), renowned mystic and penitent of the Terz'Ordine Francescano. DESCRIPTION AND INTERNAL APPARATUS: • Relic: Substantial textile fragment of the Saint's penitential garment (sai), mounted at the center on a rich golden radiating star. • Cartouche: "Ex Veste S. Margaritæ Cortonen." handwritten/printed on parchment fringed with a baroque flaming motif. • Background: Precious red canneté silk fabric bordered by passementerie and gold metallic threads. • Glass: Thick original antique crystal glass with beveled/peripheral grinding. • Structure: Robust mounting in silvered/gilt metal with twisted interlaced weave, perimeter edge with repoussé leaf-shaped motifs and a large original twisted suspension ring at the top. SEAL AND AUTHENTICITY: On the back, inside the sealed compartment, are present: - An era-appropriate marbled paper with the original red silk threads perfectly taut and intact. - A large red ecclesiastical wax seal, perfectly preserved, bearing the raised imprint of the figure of a Bishop/Prelate with mitre and blessing staff. The reliquary case is closed originally, completely intact and never tampered with. DIMENSIONS: 7 cm x 6 cm (thickness about 1.5 cm; height with ring about 8.5 cm).
