Although older auction catalogues often list his birth and death years incorrectly as 1834–1914, official documents show that he lived from 1864 to 1943. He is internationally renowned for his refined busts and sculptures that mark the transition from the academic neoclassical style to Art Nouveau. Biography and Career Education: Aurili studied at the Florence Academy, where in 1883 he won the first prize for sculpture. Belgium and Paris (1890–1904): Around 1890 he moved to France and settled in Paris. During this period he exhibited several times at the prestigious Salon des Artistes Français (for example in 1893, 1894 and 1896). He made the transition here to the graceful Art Nouveau style. Brussels (1905–1914): In the early 20th century he worked for a period in Brussels for the renowned art foundry and studio A. Carli Frères. Côte d'Azur (1916+): Later in life he moved to the south of France, where he operated shops under the name "Aux Arts Florentins". In 1935 he designed the monument for King Albert I in Antibes. Style and Work His oeuvre is extensive and highly varied. Works by his hand are typically signed with "Aurili", "R. Aurili" or "Prof. R. Aurili". He frequently used materials such as marble, bronze, terracotta, alabaster and plaster. His most favored subjects were: - Elegant female busts and romantic female figures. - Mythological and historical figures, including gladiators, Roman soldiers, Hercules and Napoleon. - Religious scenes, such as busts of Jesus Christ and angels. - Decorative Art Nouveau objects, including richly decorated vases, clocks and lamps.
