Being away from Paris and absorbed in work, I read it late. I recognized therein the kindness you showed me from my beginnings in the novel. I am all the more sensitive to it as it has been rare from my great elders. I count them and I do not forget them: You, Verhaeren, J. H. Rosny. I do not speak to you of the vileness that was done to you. Tartuffe rules. Tartuffe defends morality, as he defends the homeland.
