Rudyard Kipling - 5 Early Editions incl. Barrack-Room Ballads, Life’s Handicap, Many Inventions, The Light That Failed & The Day’s Work - 1891–1898 Description An attractive collection of five early editions and early printings of works by Rudyard Kipling, published in London between 1891 and 1898, including several copies issued within only weeks or months of their respective first editions and first issues. The collection brings together poetry, short fiction and one of Kipling’s earliest novels, providing a representative group from the decade in which he established himself as one of the major literary figures of the late Victorian period. Four volumes are in the characteristic original blue Macmillan cloth with gilt lettering and decorative spine ornament, while Barrack-Room Ballads is preserved in its original brown Methuen cloth. The collection comprises: 1. Barrack-Room Ballads and Other Verses Rudyard Kipling London: Methuen and Co., 1892. Second Edition, 1892 — published in the same year as the first edition. An important early edition of one of Kipling’s best-known collections of poetry. The title page explicitly identifies the present copy as the Second Edition. Original brown publisher’s cloth with gilt lettering. 2. Life’s Handicap: Being Stories of Mine Own People Rudyard Kipling London and New York: Macmillan and Co., 1891. The verso records: “First Edition, August 1891. Reprinted, September 1891.” This is therefore the September 1891 printing, issued only one month after the first issue. Original blue publisher’s cloth with gilt lettering and decoration. 3. The Light That Failed Rudyard Kipling London and New York: Macmillan and Co., 1892. The printing history records: “First Edition, March 1891. Reprinted April 1891, June 1891, November 1891, 1892.” The present copy is consequently an early 1892 printing of Kipling’s first novel. Original blue publisher’s cloth with gilt lettering and decorative spine. An early owner’s inscription, “R. B. King,” is present on the title page. 4. Many Inventions Rudyard Kipling London and New York: Macmillan and Co., 1893. The verso records: “First Edition printed June 1893. Reprinted July 1893.” This is the July 1893 printing, issued only one month after the first issue. The volume contains fourteen stories, including The Finest Story in the World, The Lost Legion, In the Rukh and The Children of the Zodiac. Original blue publisher’s cloth with gilt lettering and decoration. 5. The Day’s Work Rudyard Kipling London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1898. The verso records: “First Edition September 1898. Reprinted October 1898.”This is therefore the October 1898 printing, issued only one month after the first edition. The collection includes The Bridge-Builders, The Ship that Found Herself, .007, The Maltese Cat and The Brushwood Boy. Original blue publisher’s cloth with gilt lettering and decoration. Condition Good to fair antique condition, with considerable age-related wear consistent with books now approximately 130 years old. All five volumes retain their original publisher’s cloth bindings. The bindings show rubbing, fading, marks, edge and corner wear, with wear and small losses particularly noticeable at some spine extremities. Barrack-Room Ballads shows more pronounced fading and wear to the cloth. The four Macmillan volumes nevertheless retain their attractive gilt spine lettering and decorative elements, although with varying degrees of fading and rubbing. Internally, the books show general age toning, occasional foxing, spotting, handling marks and minor staining, but compatible with age and oerfectlynreadable. Quite sound bindings and intsct spines, straight boards . The Light That Failed bears an early ownership inscription to the title page. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition description. An appealing group of five early Kipling editions from 1891–1898, particularly notable for the 1892 Second Edition of Barrack-Room Ballads and three Macmillan volumes printed only one month after their respective first editions.
