Rural farming cart, Spanish Popular School, 19th century

Descriptio Carved wood assembled with wrought iron. An antique agricultural cart with a compact, open structure, designed for animal-drawn transport in traditional rural settings. The cart features a rectangular platform defined by vertical boards and large spoked wheels reinforced with metal rims, retaining their original fastening and hitching systems. The surface reveals an intense patina of age, with worn polychrome paint in shades of blue and red, natural cracks, signs of use, and oxidation that accentuate the piece’s authentic character. The construction details and the rustic joints reflect the survival of popular artisanal techniques typical of 19th-century rural Spain, linked to the manufacture of sturdy and durable work vehicles. The harmony between utility, structural simplicity, and rich material expression endows the cart with great aesthetic and documentary value, making it a magnificent example of folk art and traditional ethnographic heritage.
