In this, the monumental work "Trattato di Chirurgia" is described, published under the direction of the renowned French physicians Simon Duplay and Paul Reclus and issued in Italy by UTET (Unione Tipografico-Editrice Torinese) at the end of the 19th century. The work is complete in 9 volumes (including the text and index tomes). All volumes feature an antique, period binding personalized with the name of the original owner: Surgeon Francesco Scalfari. Originating from Monteleone di Calabria (the locality that would become Vibo Valentia in 1928), Doctor Scalfari was a member of the eminent Calabrian family and brother of the celebrated intellectual, journalist, and founder of the daily La Repubblica, Eugenio Scalfari. Conditions: The inner pages are solid and readable, with the typical natural browning of time and physiological foxing that do not impair reading. The external handcrafted antique binding, personalized with the surgeon's name, shows evident signs of age and use (as per photos), an element that nevertheless certifies the authenticity and the historical charm of the lot. An exceptional piece for collectors of medical history and relics of twentieth-century Italian intellectual history.
