Salome with the Head of Saint John the Baptist. Copy by Titian. Italian

Descriptio Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 47 x 38 cm; framed 62 x 53 cm. A 19th-century painting that faithfully reproduces Titian’s famous composition. The young Salome, with a delicate countenance and dressed in rich red and gold tones, holds the decapitated head of St. John the Baptist on a platter, its dramatic shadow hidden in the gloom. The contrast between the vitality of the female figure and the harshness of the martyrdom motif intensifies the symbolic meaning. The dark background enhances the clarity of the subject’s skin and idealized features, in keeping with the Venetian Renaissance style reinterpreted in the 19th century. This is an academic work, designed for a cultured collector who valued the recreation of the great masters. Due to its age and history of use, this lot may show signs of wear and previous interventions. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, no specialized technical testing has been performed. The absence of any mention of restorations does not guarantee that none exist. You may request additional information before placing a bid. This does not affect the buyer’s statutory rights.
