In biblical scriptures and the Christian tradition that the painter obsessively reinterpreted, the horse is a colossal, symbolic beast of burden: it evokes everything from divine power in the Book of Job to the horsemen of the Apocalypse announcing the end times. The unhinged, almost grotesque laughter that Dalí sculpts on the equine is not a gesture of mere profane mockery, but the surrealist representation of a sacred delirium; a neigh of mystical catharsis that blurs the boundary between the pain of sacrifice and the joy of divine revelation, transforming a small gold jewel into an amulet of spiritual transcendence.
