Scharenberg Rotterdam - Jardinière - gardener - Copper - Thistle motif

An extremely beautiful and rare antique Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) jardinière/plant container, made of brass (yellow copper) dating from about 1900–1910. This exclusive piece of interior décor carries on the base the mark of Scharenberg, the well-known and leading Dutch jeweler and Hoflieferant with branches in The Hague and Rotterdam. Scharenberg was known at the time for selling high-quality luxury items and applied arts to the well-to-do bourgeoisie. The jardinière is richly embellished with a beautiful, relief-worked (repoussé) motif of stylized thistles, including detailed leaves and flower buds. The two graceful, organically shaped handles on the sides flow smoothly into a characteristic Jugendstil leaf motif. In good condition with the usual signs of age. On the base there is still some silvering visible as in the last photo.
