Sculpture

A particularly decoratively crafted bronze sculpture of a strongly stylized owl, executed in the characteristic geometric language of Art Deco. The powerful, almost architectural lines of the head, the large stylized eyes and the elongated silhouette give the sculpture an imposing presence. From every angle the interplay of lines changes, so the sculpture fits strikingly well both in a classic and in a modern interior. The design is associated in the art- and auction market with the work of the Dutch sculptor Johan Coenraad Altorf (1876–1955). This piece concerns a later bronze edition after the well-known design. An important detail of this exemplar are the markings present: * In the bronze, the designation “Coenrad” * French foundry/guarantee mark “JB Déposée – Bronze Garanti – Paris” * Model/mold number A6917 The owl is rendered in bronze with a beautiful dark brown patina. The subtle lighter accents on the protruding parts emphasize the sharp Art Deco forms and give the sculpture extra depth. The sculpture sits on a high black marble pedestal with natural light veining, which gives the entire piece a monumental and very elegant appearance. A characterful object for the collector of Art Deco, modernist sculpture, bronze animal figures and distinctive interior art.
