Sculpture

Important and rare element of medieval architecture in hard limestone, modillion style - Romanesque sculpted in high relief of a moustached man's face. Heavy object weighing 19 kilograms 40 cm tall 28 x 25 cm in footprint medieval architectural element in hard limestone, representing a Romanesque-era modillon sculpted in high relief with a moustached man's face. This Haute Époque style piece is remarkable for its exceptional size of 40 cm in height and its weight of 19 kg. Unlike elements that are often truncated or cut, this modillon still possesses its original structure, including part of its long blocking tail at the back, which was used to anchor it deeply into the masonry of the cornice of a medieval church. The face presents all the codes of the great monumental sculpture of the twelfth century: almond-shaped eyes with excavated pupils (characteristics of Rhodanian or Burgundian monastic workshops), pronounced geometric eyebrows, a wide drooping moustache and an expressive open mouth. The natural erosion of the stone, due to centuries spent outside facing the elements, gives this piece an authentic historic patina and a striking artistic presence.
